The Koppelkerk is a former church which has been fully repurposed as a sanctuary for art and culture. Every Friday, Saturday and Sunday, visitors can enjoy exhibitions, concerts, lectures and social debate in the beautiful setting of picturesque Bredevoort.

All the muses under the same roof

You would normally find art in a museum, music in a concert hall, literature and poetry in the library and science at the university. At the Koppelkerk, all these muses are united under the same roof. By day, the Koppelkerk is a museum with beautiful temporary exhibitions and tours of the artworks at 14:00 and 15:00. In the evening, the multifunctional church becomes a stage for music, literature, science and social debate.

Charming book bar

In addition to the exhibitions in the church hall, the upper hall of the Koppelkerk houses exhibitions by local and German artists. After all that culture, it is high time for a cup of coffee and something tasty in the Book Bar. The Book Bar is set up as a living room with a wood stove, a nice sitting area and bookcases everywhere. The bookcases are stocked by various antiquarian bookshops from this national book town.

Markets

In summer, there is a variety of outdoor activities around the Koppelkerk. An international book market is organised four times a year with various Dutch and German booksellers. The Bazar—a charming market full of retro items and handmade products—is held in August. This is, of course, accompanied by retro tunes.

Heerlyckheid Bredevoort

The Koppelkerk is in the beautiful fortified town of Bredevoort. Heerlyckheid Bredevoort (Bredevoort estate) used to have a castle. At that time, Rembrandt’s sweetheart Hendrickje Stoffels still lived within its walls. Like nearby Groenlo, Bredevoort was a strategic location, which made it an important battleground during the Eighty Years’ War. Today, the quaint old streets and castellan houses still remind us of this past. Bredevoort has grown from a garrison town to a cultural town. In addition to various antiquarian bookshops, the town is home to galleries and crafts such as a goldsmith, watchmaker and beer brewer. In summer, you can enjoy the Summer Concerts under the idyllic trees in the centre every Sunday.
